Audits & Pre-Audit Preparation
|
Some importers might not take their Customs obligations to heart until they are audited, which generally makes for an unpleasant experience.
The pain can be lessened by having an experienced U.S. Customs law attorney perform a pre-audit review to:
- Identify products with duty overpayments and pursue duty recovery;
- Identify and disclose any situations where duties are underpaid to avoid penalties that potentially could be enforced if the problem is left for the auditors to discover; and
- Develop and implement effective internal controls to improve chances of
passing audit (i.e., avoiding a potential downgrade in risk category, expansion and continuation of the audit, including follow-up visits).
Importers are generally provided sufficient advance notice with which to identify and implement reforms that can be taken into account by auditors.
As U.S. Customs specialist who has practiced exclusively as a Customs law attorney for over 18 years, I have extensive experience handling Customs audits. Please refer to my detailed Customs Practice Resume.
